Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Wow! This post has been in the making for quite some time... I can't believe we are to the point that I feel confident enough to share it all now because we have enough of Will's room done. (Warning: Pic heavy post coming up...)

The final outcome for Will's room wasn't necessarily what we originally envisioned. When we didn't know if the baby was a girl or boy, I was still holding out for a Wizard of Oz theme room for a girl and Under the Sea for a Boy. Steven wasn't so into my Wizard of Oz theme (it's my favorite movie of all time) and so we eventually settled on Under the Sea. I think that was because we both sort of just believed it was a girl. Lo and behold, at our Gender Reveal party we found out we would be having Baby BOY Young and then all bets were off. There was no longer any talk of sea creatures, boats, or anything even remotely nautical. We decided sports were the way to go. See, Steven is super sports oriented (specifically football though he will watch and enjoys just about every sport out there... even curling which he actually loves for some strange reason) and the longer we have been together, the more I enjoy sitting down and watching a good football game. I prefer my other sports to be live but football I can do live, on TV, on the radio... whatever. I have to admit though that I have a hard time getting into the curling thing. Naturally, our vision was born (5 months before Will was set to be.) Even Kenzie is into sports so we knew it had to be done.

See? Our little football loving girl
We started by going to Babies R Us and picking out a "theme" bedding set. While we didn't buy the set this time, the blanket that went with the set is what inspired his room. Just like with Kenzie, we bought the blanket (technically it was a gift from Nana... same as with Kenzie) and we went about choosing paint colors. I know, I know... blue. Stereotypical boy. We didn't do pink with Kenzie so why would we stick to blue for Will? It just seemed right. I wanted to make sure that Will's room (specifically the paint on the walls) wasn't just a boring, all blue room though. Just like with Kenzie, we decided two colors were necessary and thus... the vertical stripes on the wall behind his crib were added to the new vision for the room.

Momma and Steven spent quite a bit of time painting the light blue onto the walls and the next weekend Momma came back and we added the darker blue stripes. The worst part of it all? Taping those blasted stripes. It took all three of us, a laser level, an actual level, a pen, painters' tape, a ladder, and a lot of patience. In the end... all worth it. We love the way it turned out. I can't believe we did all that on our own without hiring anyone.

I helped tape. Kenzie "helped" me.

Then we got to work on the decals. We chose a football player decal for one wall. That thing wasn't very much fun to put on, but it looked really good once it was there. The other decal, the baseball player, had to be added later because we needed his crib in place to make sure we put everything in the right place. We ended up liking the baseball player better overall, but the football player was an awesome last minute find that we couldn't pass up.

We also used a few UCF things we had hanging around already to decorate his walls. You might notice that one wall is entirely "football" oriented. The UCF street sign and a picture I took of Pegasus and the Knight in the UCF endzone were necessary.

The wall behind his crib is more "baseball" oriented including the baseball player decal and a picture we already owned of three of the better known baseball stadiums in the US, Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, and the old Yankee Stadium. While none of those stadiums are home to our preferential team (Miami Marlins), we love the picture.

I think I am most proud of Will's name on the wall. We started with regular letters bought from Michael's and I dressed them up a bit. I can't believe I did that on my own. I can't decide what I am prouder of... the blue stripes or the letters. Probably the letters. =) (Yes, note that there are no diapers on his changing table... if we have a "Young" baby we might be in size 1 before I know it so I haven't bought any yet.)

We also added a framed poster type print of Dan Marino (have to get a bit of the Dolphins in there) as well as a picture of a football play that I made. I just used construction paper and a white paint pen... then we framed it. Easy peasy and it added a bit more to his walls. Kenzie has a lot of handmade things in her room from pictures I have taken, to the ceramic owls and monkey her Aunt Juju painted, so we wanted to make sure Will also had those little personalized touches in his room.

As for furniture, we moved the changing table from Kenzie's room (and gave her a big girl dresser), moved the glider from her room, left the other nightstand from the old bedroom set that matches the one in Kenzie's room, bought a crib similar to Kenzie's from Crib 4 Life (highly recommend them), and will eventually buy the shelving thing for his closet (like Kenzie has). We are holding off on that for right this moment just because it isn't necessary yet.

That is basically it. It took us a lot longer to get his room together than Kenzie's did, but we are pretty much there. We couldn't be happier with the end result too. I hope he likes it when he is old enough to appreciate it. Kenzie is just now at the age when she is starting to enjoy her room and all the decorations. She does really like Will's room too though and I think she would ask us to move the football and baseball player decals in to hers if she could get the right words out. =) That is, if Steven doesn't move into his room first.

Welcome Back to Your Regularly Scheduled Programming

It's almost time! School is upon us. The kids in our county return on Wednesday. Kenzie's first day of school is next Tuesday. Monday we will have Meet the Teacher during the day and then Tuesday will be her first day of VPK. More on all that in a minute... This week though officially started our return to normalcy. It's about time! Kenzie started back to dance on Monday. The fall season started and she was so excited. She was asking me all day about when it would be time to go to dance. She was just so ready to get back to it. This season/year we have elected to stay with the same teacher she had last year, Ms. Rebekah. Kenzie loved her so it seemed like a great bet when we found out that she was going to be teaching Pre-K 2. This year will be a lot like last year in that they will do ballet, tap, and tumbling but the skills we be more advanced. More "dance language" will be used (though Ms. Rebekah has always focused on giving them proper terminology anyway)...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...

Goodbye Preschool... Hello Elementary School!

Bear with me... this post is not only about Kenzie's final day at school but all the crazy things (they are just crazy to me because I can't believe that little 7 lbs 6 oz baby is about to be in kindergarten) leading up to it that are preparing her for being a kindergartener so it is a bit long. Aaaaannnnndddd... That's it. We have reached the end of an era for Kenzie. At least the end of a stage of sorts. We have officially left behind the preschool stage and are getting ready to embark on the "school age" section of her life. These last few weeks have been... emotional. About three weeks ago we took our happy selves over to the elementary school and attended the kindergarten orientation for our baby girl. Who isn't actually much of a "baby" anymore despite my protests. We were able to take a tour of the school and see some of the kindergarten classrooms, the specials classrooms, cafeteria, clinic, and media center. The kids were all given t...
