Dear Will,
No! No, no no, no no!! It's crazy! How on earth am I already writing your 1 month letter?!? Despite how I think time should go, here I am. There have been plenty of times this past month that I have wondered where the time is going and equally as many moments that I spend wondering if time could just speed up a bit. It is crazy to think that you entered our lives just 1 month ago. It seems like you have been a part of our family much longer.
You are growing by leaps and bounds. You were born at 7 lbs, 7 oz and 19 3/4 inches. Honestly, we sort of expected you to be a bit bigger when you were born since you made it all the way to 39 weeks. It's okay though because you have made up for it by growing like a weed this month. You were higher than your birth weight at a week old. We never thought we would see that. Now, you weigh 11 lbs, 3 oz (86th percentile) and are 22 inches long (67th percentile). You are a tall, but chunky, little guy according to the doctor. I'm not sure how many chins a 1 month old needs... but you have a couple. You were totally out of newborn clothes before you were a week old. You are now out of 0-3 for the most part and are almost exclusively wearing 3 month clothing. We notice that a lot of your sleepers give us issues because you feet are so big that while you fit in the sleeper as far as length and weight go... your feet are sometimes squished in there. Hopefully you grow into those things. Currently you still seem to have most of the full head of hair you were born with. Seriously?? Where did that come from? I was convinced you would be as bald as your sister was. Nope. We are not 100% sure yet if you will keep that hair. It does seem like portions of your hair may be thinning and Daddy said he thinks he might see some blonde hair coming in. I was rubbing your head the other day (sorry for the greasy hair that causes... but it is just so soft!) and I noticed that you had a few strands fall out. We shall see what the future brings on that. =)
You are a champion nurser, hence your weight gain. It has been a learning experience for me to have a baby that is so good at eating at such an early age. You didn't have any learning curves other than perfecting your latch. We still have days that I have to make you stop and relatch, but you are doing really well. You eat about every 2 hours during the day. Sometimes you stretch a bit but I usually find that if you do that it is normally because you had (or will have) a block of no more than an hour and a half between feedings sometime close by. All that eating is helping you grow though so I will sacrifice the sleep I am losing to feed you so often. Haha! This week you have finally started stretching all your nightly feeds to 3 hours apart. That means that I only have to get up two times during the night with you and the third time you get up is usually between 6:30 and 7:30, when you are up for the day.
You like your sleep. Most of the time. I find that you are similar to your sister in your sleep patterns during the day. You are awake most of the morning and you like to be entertained for a lot of that time. You will sometimes lay in your crib or pack n play while I do some cleaning, but you prefer to be held or at least snuggled with while you are awake. Then, you sleep a lot during the middle of the day. The plus to that is that you tend to sleep during Kenzie's nap as well so I can get some things done. In the afternoon/evening, you are usually awake again. Sometimes you are awake all night until bedtime. You usually go down fairly easily though and at night you wake up to eat then go right back to sleep usually. We swaddle you at night. Sometimes you seem to like it and other times I think you want nothing more than to be able to stretch out to sleep. I think we will keep you swaddled at night for a couple more weeks then think about transitioning you out of it. Really, we just like to use it so that your startle reflex doesn't wake you up too often.
When you are awake you are so very alert! You love to watch people move around in front of you and are already tracking some with your eyes. You love your mobile in your crib as well as the mobile that hangs above your swing. You like baths. You only get one every few days but you really seem to like the warm water. I think you might end up like Kenzie and me and you will like really warm baths/showers eventually. You have also smiled a few time late this month that ALMOST seem like actual smiles for me. It's so hard at this age to determine gas smiles versus what might be a smile for Mommy. My favorite one was earlier this week when I first noticed that you were smiling at times that made it seem like they were for me. You were laying on my bed and I was kissing on your little cheeks. When I pulled back you were smiling away at me. You have a lot of gas though... so who knows? I know soon it will be apparent that smiles are for us and I can't wait to see your little smile more often. It is precious.
You are so strong too! You have been lifting your head since the day you were born, just about... okay, maybe it was at about 3 days old that I noticed it, but you have amazing head control already. You will hold your head up for really long periods of time looking around. You just don't like to miss anything. When you are willing to do tummy time for more than 15 seconds without protest you are almost doing a full on baby pushup. I definitely didn't think we would see that so soon. I wonder if you will keep up with this quick-ish motor development and maybe do things like crawling and walking early. Who knows?
We have taken you out quite a bit. We were so different with Kenzie, but we have realized that with a toddler (and precautions) we can go out to specific places when we like. You have gone to restaurants and stores. You like to be worn when we are out and about. You immediately fall asleep almost as soon as I have you strapped in. You usually stay that way the entire time we are out. If we go to a restaurant, you sit in your carrier and usually remain asleep for most of the time we are out. I appreciate that because I know one day we won't be so lucky that you remain asleep. We make sure to keep you covered and we don't let anyone touch you or get too close. You also still love to ride in the car and it puts you to sleep pretty quickly most days. On the days it doesn't you still sit quietly and just look around (not that you can see much more than the seat since you are rear facing, obviously) while we drive. Eventually you will fall asleep if the ride is long enough.
It is amazing how much you have already changed in the last month. I remember bringing you home like it was yesterday and not a month ago. I am loving watching you grow and change as the days go on. I can't wait to see how you continue to develop.
I can't believe you are a month old already! We love you so much! Your sister thinks you are awesome and she loves to hug and kiss on you. I hope that relationship continues to grow and that you understand one day how much she loves you and you feel the same.
Happy 1 month birthday little buddy!
XOXO,
Mommy
