And So It Begins...

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is quickly approaching. We are very serious about making sure that Kenzie and Will learn the real meaning behind Christmas and the reason we celebrate. That being said, we are also very into the fun portion of Christmas... Santa, the tree, and now, Elf on a Shelf.

This year my parents purchased us the Elf on a Shelf when they went to North Carolina and visited a huge Christmas store. We stashed away the elf and waited....

It is now officially time to break out the elf and start our newest holiday tradition. Last year we started an advent activities tradition. Kenzie really seemed to enjoy it. Each day leading up to Christmas we did a new activity. We are bringing that back this year and I think it will be a fun tradition for years to come.

Our elf showed up today. Kenzie actually spent last night with Nana and Papa at their timeshare while they are still in town after Thanksgiving. When they brought her home tonight she took quite some time to notice the elf. Once she did she was super enthused.

She immediately wanted to hold him. We told her that we had to read the book he brought first. So, we all sat on the couch and read his book. We took some time to explain to her what he was all about. How he reports to Santa and that he cannot be touched or talk but that she can talk to him. She told us numerous times "Can't touch him" and looked at him a while. Anyone that has done Elf on the Shelf knows that you have to name your elf. Well, after Kenzie threw out "Foot" and "Kenzie" as possible options, we settled on "Kenny" because it sounds similar to Kenzie. Once she understood that she could send back requests for Christmas gifts to Santa through Kenny, she wasted no time telling him that she really wanted candy for Christmas. Crazy kid.

I think this year is going to be a lot of fun as she understands more about the fun traditions that are involved in Christmas.

I skipped a Friday Favorites post this week. We have been super busy with hosting Thanksgiving and then having my parents in town so I didn't have a chance. That being said, I think the next few weeks will be dedicated to sharing our Elf on the Shelf fun. So, each Friday Favorites post until after Christmas will be showcasing the antics of Kenny. This year is going to be fairly easy for us because Kenzie is easily enthused. I'm not sure how much trouble Kenny will get into this year but it should be fun. Stay tuned for more elf excitement. =)

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...

13 Weeks to 13 Miles! OUC Orlando Half Marathon Training: Week 7

This is it. This is officially the middle week of the 13 weeks to 13 miles training plan. It's the odd man out week. It is also the week after our rest week and the week that things really start to pick up speed. We have mostly done overall low mileage weeks up until this point topping out at 13 miles which is overall less than the half marathon... by a measly .1 mile but that mileage was all divvied up over 3 runs so it's definitely not the same. Now we start ramping up and we don't slow down until the week before the race when we essentially taper. This week is an overall 15 miles and by the end, we will top out at 22 weekly miles. Eek. We can do it! I know we can. I hope. Haha! Tuesday Plan: 4 Miles, Actual: 4 Miles Whew! Another run in the books. This one was probably one of the worst ones so far. Not because I didn't run okay. I was actually fine for most of the run. I kept my 1:1 intervals and paced about 13:30 without too many outliers as far as timing goes. ...

New State Parks, Beaches, Movies, and Friend Time

Another weekend has been put in the books for the Young Household. This weekend was actually a bit less crazy than some of our others, I think but still filled with fun and some new things. We started Friday afternoon when Steven was able to come home an hour or so early. We started getting ready for our big Saturday plans and then made pizza and sat down to watch a movie. We love this Friday tradition. We try to do it at least a couple times a month. We used to order pizza but when we started watching our finances closer, we determined that it was better for us to make pizza either homemade or frozen (and the kids like frozen pizza as much as pizza from a restaurant right now so we will continue to capitalize on that for a while... Will loves homemade but Kenzie is in a current anti-homemade stage because she is weird). Anyway, we made a frozen pizza and some cheesy bread. Then we sat down together to watch Inside Out. We picked it up at the library last week and never had a chance ...
