30 Things About Me

This week I will turn the big 3-0 (and also kick off our crazy July of birthday/anniversary activities). July is always a really busy month for us and I can't believe we are already back around to it again. I swear, Kenzie just turned 1 yesterday. I was just looking at our calendar late last week and July is so booked that there are days with things written on them and arrows pointing to the days they actual occur on just because the day the event actually occurs is so packed that nothing else would fit in its square. Pray for us...

Anyway... a lot of this blog is about our family, specifically Kenzie. Lately I have been keeping up with updating to a point about myself with my weekly pregnancy journal entries, but usually this blog is dedicated to our family as a whole or children (even those weekly journals are somewhat about Will and even Kenzie.) So, in light of turning 30 this week, I thought it would be fun to try to come up with 30 (random) facts about myself to share with you all about me. Some are fairly well known by my family and friends. Others, maybe, not so much. Let me be a little self-centered for a moment. =)

So, without further ado... 30 things about me...

1. I am not a native Floridian. As most people aren't. I was born in Mississippi and lived there until I was 13 when we relocated to South Florida. I wouldn't have it any other way.
2. On a related note, sometimes my Southern accent still makes an appearance. It's mostly gone though. However, when I first moved here and started working I earned the nickname Pank Lemonade because I couldn't say pink with an /i/ sound.
3. I was a Thespian in high school. Loved it but would never have considered it as a lasting career. Just a fun hobby for me but I made some great friends.
4. I worked at McDonalds from the time I was 14 until about 21. I was there weekends, evenings, and on breaks from school until I went to college. Then, I would work over summer and winter break until I graduated college and permanently moved to Central Florida.
5. Speaking of McDonald's, my working for them allowed me the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch in the 2002 Winter Olympics relay. I carried it for 2/10 of a mile (the normal length for all torch bearers) when it came through Miami that year on its way to the games.
6. I have three "degrees." I earned my CDA (child development associate credential... maybe not technically a degree but I still hold it) after graduating high school. I would have had it at graduation but you have to be 18 and I didn't turn 18 until the July after graduation. I earned my BS in psychology in 2005 and my Ed.S. in school psychology in 2009. You couldn't pay me to pursue a doctorate though. I'm officially done.
7. I love to sing. I am by no means awesome but I have a decent voice. I can't read music for the life of me but I can usually match a pitch fairly well so I do it by ear.
8. I am now a Stay at Home Mom (SAHM). Despite having a graduate level degree, I chose to stay home with our kids while they are little. I have always wanted to so and as long as we can manage it, I will remain home.
9. I have lived in over 18 different home/apartments/townhomes/duplexes/etc. (as long as you count my 3 different dorms in college).
10. I don't have much of an artistic bone in my body when it comes to drawing, painting, etc but I like to consider myself craft. Pinterest is an addiction and I love to make a lot of homemade things for parties. Wait until we get around to the decorations post for Kenzie's party. Be warned, that one will be super pic heavy.
11. I am a bit obsessive about order. I can tell if people rearrange things without telling me. I also have minor (sometime major) freakouts when things are out of order or "messy".
12. I could seriously spend all my time at the beach, despite the fact that I would either end up smelling like permanent sunblock or looking like a lobster. I love the beach... my skin... not so much.
13. Prior to marrying Steven, I had only visited about 4-5 states and two of them were the states I lived in.
14. I have super, super, naturally curly hair that I don't like most of the time. It's genetic. I couldn't avoid it. You always want what you don't have though. I'm just too lazy to spend too much time straightening it and I would rather spend most of my free time with my family or doing something other than overheating while I blow dry and then flat iron my hair... for hours sometimes.
15. I hate the color purple. I don't care if Kenzie wants everything she owns to be purple but I will never choose anything purple for myself. I used to love it as a kid. I don't know what happened but at about 14, I just realized that I do not like it.
16. I have a highly irrational fear of spiders. Always have. I've gotten a bit better over the years but I can't even really think about them without getting the heeby-jeebies.
17. I was a cheerleader in high school. That's really all I have to say about that...
18. I am a planner. I love to plan out vacations and I hate when my plans end up needing to be changed last minute. I'm learning to be a bit more spontaneous but it is hard. Routine is vital for me.
19. I love to read. I don't have the time I used to but when I do, I like to pick up a book and get lost in it.
20. I have a biological full brother, a half brother, and a step brother. I have no idea how I ended up the only girl in all this.
21. I am the first born girl to a first born girl. I think I am around the 4th or 5th generation of being the first born girl to the first born girl (if that makes sense). Kenzie continued that pattern.
22. I have an extremely high pain tolerance. I get it from my mom. I was off prescription meds less than 4 days following my c-section and was off all meds (even Motrin) by the end of the week. Yet, if I stub my toe... you can expect me to cry. It isn't so much the pain as I feel dumb doing something that makes me stub my toe.
23. I can be really hard on myself. I take criticism really hard. I think I need it and I wouldn't grow without it, but I hate not always being able to do something right on the first try.
24. I LOVE all things Vera Bradley. I don't know where it started... or why, but I constantly have something Vera Bradley on my person.
25. I love to cruise. It is my preferred method of travel. It's like a floating hotel. You go to bed and wake up at your next destination. No driving involved. Plus, our destinations usually involve beaches (at least so far).
26. I love salty foods. Chips, pickles, anything with salt. I like sweets too but I would turn them down in a heartbeat for some cheese fries or chips and dip.
27. I met my husband when I was 16. Technically, we probably met when I was 15, but we didn't start dating until I was 16. He was 2 years older than me and except for a 6 month period shortly after we first started dating, we have been together since. We will be married for 8 years the week after my birthday.
28. I practically live in flip flops. Even a lot of my dressier shoes are some version of a flip flop. If I'm not wearing flip flops (or maybe tennis shoes when I am walking or working out), I am usually barefoot.
29. I still can't believe I'm turning 30 this week...
30. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. I have an amazing husband, a precious, precocious daughter and a son on the way. I couldn't ask for anything more.

Welcome Back to Your Regularly Scheduled Programming

It's almost time! School is upon us. The kids in our county return on Wednesday. Kenzie's first day of school is next Tuesday. Monday we will have Meet the Teacher during the day and then Tuesday will be her first day of VPK. More on all that in a minute... This week though officially started our return to normalcy. It's about time! Kenzie started back to dance on Monday. The fall season started and she was so excited. She was asking me all day about when it would be time to go to dance. She was just so ready to get back to it. This season/year we have elected to stay with the same teacher she had last year, Ms. Rebekah. Kenzie loved her so it seemed like a great bet when we found out that she was going to be teaching Pre-K 2. This year will be a lot like last year in that they will do ballet, tap, and tumbling but the skills we be more advanced. More "dance language" will be used (though Ms. Rebekah has always focused on giving them proper terminology anyway)...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...

Goodbye Preschool... Hello Elementary School!

Bear with me... this post is not only about Kenzie's final day at school but all the crazy things (they are just crazy to me because I can't believe that little 7 lbs 6 oz baby is about to be in kindergarten) leading up to it that are preparing her for being a kindergartener so it is a bit long. Aaaaannnnndddd... That's it. We have reached the end of an era for Kenzie. At least the end of a stage of sorts. We have officially left behind the preschool stage and are getting ready to embark on the "school age" section of her life. These last few weeks have been... emotional. About three weeks ago we took our happy selves over to the elementary school and attended the kindergarten orientation for our baby girl. Who isn't actually much of a "baby" anymore despite my protests. We were able to take a tour of the school and see some of the kindergarten classrooms, the specials classrooms, cafeteria, clinic, and media center. The kids were all given t...
