Sweet Sweet Summertime

It's official. "Summer" has started for us. Kenzie has finished school for the school year which sort of signifies the summer months for us. We have a few months now before she starts VPK and officially goes to school for a few hours 4 days a week. It's not the full day and full week of elementary school, but it is still a big deal for all of us. So, we are soaking in what seems to be our final few months before a major change in our lives. Something about VPK makes me realize that time is flying by and before we know it, both kids will be in elementary school and both of us will be working. Life will change... but until then we will be having fun.

My goal over the summer is to do a bunch of our normal stuff, but try to find a few new ways to keep these kids busy (and learning when possible.) We have elected to not go on any vacation this year so we want to try to spend as much time as possible at the beach and pool as well as find a few new things to do around here. We obviously have our Disney passes, but we decided to get the passes with blockout dates for the summer as we likely wouldn't want to be there in the summer heat, anyway. That means we need to find a few new things. It's good to expand our horizons. =)

Taking a cue from some of our family and friends that do this every year, we have initiated our first ever "Youngs' Summer of Fun" bucket list. This is a list of a few things (that are somewhat out of our norm) for us to try to do over the summer months. We are certainly not sure if we will be able to finish all of them, but we are going to try.

This weekend we did a few fun activities (though none of the ones listed on the bucket list, mainly because I didn't want to put something on just to immediately check it off as soon as we printed out the list for the fridge) worth recapping.

Steven actually had to work part of Friday. Gasp! Haha! With the holiday weekend the prior weekend, his hours didn't add up to allow him to take off on Friday, but once he got home we did a bit of running around. Nothing major. Once we got home though, we set up the sprinkler in the front yard. That's the kind of activity we like... one that is functional and fun. The grass needed some water in a random spot that our sprinklers miss for some reason and the kids think the sprinkler is awesome. Kenzie had a blast running through it. Will is less sure, which is actually weird because he is the one that doesn't mind water in his eyes or care if you splash him. Anyway, Kenzie ran through the sprinkler for a long time and Will played in the driveway. It was a fun start to the weekend.

On Saturday we went over to Palm Coast to visit Grandma and Grandaddy. We went out to Jungle Hut Beach. It was gorgeous. We happened to schedule our visit at low tide. The beach seemed endless (for an East coast beach) and the water was warm but still cool enough to be pleasant. Best temp of an East coast beach this far north that I have ever experienced. We were also able to let the kids play under the tent with Grandma and Grandaddy and Steven and I were able to go out into the water without kids hanging on us. Okay, okay. Truthfully, we couldn't have paid the kids to get in the water this weekend. We do this every year. At the beginning of the summer the kids are a bit unsure about the ocean. They will play in the sand and get near the water. Even put their feet in, but they won't go much farther. By the end of the summer we will have them in the water with us. Just have to let them go at their pace. At least Will doesn't have the same concern with walking on sand that Kenzie did at this age. That's half the battle. After the beach we went over to Washington Oaks for a picnic dinner. This was possibly one of our largest set ups yet. We had hot dogs and sliders, baked beans, fruit salad, chips, and cookies. Everything was yummy and the kids ate quite a bit. Guess the beach made them work up an appetite. We spent a bit of time at Grandma and Grandaddy's before heading home. Both kids fell asleep on the way home and we got them in bed without issue so it was a successful day.

Sunday was a bit more of a "lazy" day for us. We went to church in the morning and then in the afternoon we set up the kiddie pool and water table again. We had our neighbors over for a beer can chicken for dinner. They have an almost one year old and the kids love playing together.

It was a pretty great weekend. We will see what we can get into in the next week and weekend. =)

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Preschool Done.... One Step Closer to MIT

So, here it is. The end of "preschool." Note: "Preschool" and "VPK" are not used interchangeably for the purpose of our discussion. In the sense of the word, Kenzie is done with "preschool" and next year will be in "VPK". Eek! That's not allowed. Kenzie's first official year in school is now done. She is one year older, one year wiser, one year more stubborn. It's crazy for us to think back that just a few short months ago we were going to her Meet the Teacher day and we were both having some major anxiety about our baby going to school. I remember the first day of school plain as day. I thought she might have some apprehension. Nope. None. I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Kenzie went in like she owned the place. There was a day that her teacher mentioned that Kenzie was one of the quiet ones in the class and rarely spoke. I'm still not sure that she was thinking of my Kenzie. Maybe I had been dropping of...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...
