Young Summer of Fun - Bucket List Update (Week 5)

How on earth are we already about half way through our summer?? I am not 100% sure yet when Kenzie will start school, but based on the counties around us, I am going to assume it is somewhere around August 10 or maybe the week after. Crazy early this year! Anyway, that means we are steadily working our way through the summer. Some of our bucket list items might need to be pushed and completed even after school starts. I think our goal is to finish them all by Labor Day.

Anyway, this weekend we checked off one item. Let's recap the weekend, shall we?

Friday was actually our 10 year wedding anniversary. Seriously. 10 years already. And that is 10 years married... we have been together for 16. That's about half my life at this point. Crazy to think we have been together that long. We didn't have anything planned for our actual anniversary (typical) because we wanted to spend time as a family and had plans for later in the weekend when we would be alone without the kids. Instead of doing something alone that night, we all went to dinner. We ended up choosing Sonny's. Easy enough. It was a good dinner but we are realizing that places that used to cost us a minimal amount of money are now costing us an arm and a leg so we can feed 4 people. That is another rant for another time though. =) Got the kids to bed sort of early to prep for the weekend itself.

Saturday was a pretty jam packed day. We started our day super early in the morning and headed out to Debary to pick up our race packets because the 5k we were running was set for Sunday morning. If we can pick up the packets early, we do. It's just easier for us. Plus, we wanted to wear our shirts and it is easier to have them beforehand if we are going to do that. We wanted to also try to find the race route and drive it (or as much of it as we could) so we could visualize what the actual course would be like since we kept hearing so much about the hills. So, we found the race route with minimal difficulty... and holy hills, Batman! They aren't terrible necessarily, but there are a couple of big ones. The plus is that what goes up, must come down. It doesn't help that the race starts with what is probably the largest hill on the course. We then picked up our race packets which was a really easy process.

After that entire experience, we headed out to my parents' house to celebrate my sis-in-law, Danielle's, birthday. That's right! If you haven't done the math yet, Danielle is the exact day in between mine and Steven's birthdays. Crazy! We met them at a Mexican place near them for lunch. Food is always good there. This time we had a good size booth. Last time we were there, I was super pregnant with Will and it was hot and the four of us were crowded into a tiny booth (Kenzie was in a high chair on the end) and I recall getting up to go outside and cry at some point. Ah! Gotta love pregnancy hormones. After lunch we went back to my parents' house to open gifts and have cake. I might have accidentally left Danielle's gift at our house because I was trying to make sure I had everything for the kids when we left. Oops! The bonus is that my little bro was in town. He recently started as a long haul trucker so we haven't been able to see him in a while. He also got to bring his truck home for this trip, so we all got to see what it is like to live in a truck for weeks at a time. I must say, we were impressed! It is actually huge inside one of those things. Steven could even stand up entirely and still had room above his head. The kids thought "driving" it was cool and someone *cough* Nana *cough* taught her where the airhorn was.

After all the festivities, Steven and I made a quick exit because the kids were going to stay with my parents for the night. With the race being so early the next morning, we decided this was easier than making my mom or someone else be at our house before the sun to watch them while we ran. This was the first time we have been without both kids in... well, what seems like forever. We have actually never had Will stay overnight with anyone. Kenzie has stayed overnight with my parents at hotels or whatnot a few times. She loves it. We weren't sure about Will since we still have some separation anxiety, but he has been worlds better over the last few months. As it turned out, he was great when we left. He asked Nana once "Dada?" when he noticed our car missing but she redirected him and he forgot about it. Not a tear was shed. Well, not a tear by him. I might have fought off some tears as we drove away. My babies are getting so big!! Nana and Papa kept them busy. They had dinner and then took a tractor ride around the yard (and my brother's yard next door), which they LOVED apparently. Will was also kissed repeatedly by my bro and sis-in-law's dog, Maverick, but will henceforth be known as "Fuffy" because that is what Will called him when I told Will he was fluffy.

We were also excited to have a chance to have a date night without kiddos. Honestly, we have not been on a date night without at least one child since Will was about 4 months old. He is now almost 21 months old, so you can do the math on that one. For our anniversary, we decided to make a reservation at one of our favorite restaurants ever, Buca di Beppo. Shhhhh.... don't tell the kids. They love it there, too. We had to make a hasty exit from my parents' so that we could make it home to change before our reservation. We were both looking forward to some time being just the two of us. Dinner was awesome. Unfortunately, I forgot to get a picture of us. I was just enjoying being in the moment with my amazing hubby and getting to talk to him without any interruptions.

That night was spent in silence (aaaahhhhh!!!!) and charging up all of our various random running related gear in preparation for the race on Sunday. Between Fitbits, my Garmin, phones, and my headphones... we were a charging station for the night. We had to be early to bed because we had to leave our house by 5am on Sunday. Craziness!!

We were up and out by 5am. I won't recap the race again, but you can read about it here if you are interested. =) Just suffice it to say that we really enjoyed it and both of us did well. Steven did awesome for his first ever 5k.

Shortly after we got home, my mom made it to our house to drop off the kiddos. I cannot say thank you enough to her, Papa, Uncle Rick, and Aunt Danielle for watching the kids this weekend for us and especially to her for driving them back to us on Sunday. That was super helpful because we had already driven almost 2 hours total that morning and were about to pack back up and head back out for another 3 hours (almost) worth of driving. The kids did amazing with my parents and the only breakdown that even occurred was actually once they were back home. Will was super excited to wear one of our medals and freaked out when we took it back. Maybe he will be running alongside us one of these days. It's all about the bling anyway. =)

See, it's July and all. That means we also have one of my college roommate's little guy's birthday during the month (I should mention hers is also in July.... as is one of my other roommates.) They live out closer to Tampa so it is a bit of a drive over there but worth it to celebrate with them. This year, they had his birthday at a local McDonald's. Kenzie was in heaven. This one had an awesome play place and both kids just ran and climbed and enjoyed themselves. Will and his lack of fear (and sense) climbed his little self all the way to the top numerous times. Kenzie is just a playground master so she was good. The kids had Happy Meals and cake and watched the birthday boy open his gifts. It was a super fun time! Always nice to catch up with the roommies too (though we have one in Washington that we wish we could see, too... )

The rest of the night was spent relaxing. It was a super crazy weekend (again) and we were just sort of done. Kids in bed early and preparations for the week again and next weekend when Steven's birthday rolls around. Also, Dad Y is on Thursday... so there's that. We are almost half way through July!! I love this month... but it makes me sleepy. =)

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Preschool Done.... One Step Closer to MIT

So, here it is. The end of "preschool." Note: "Preschool" and "VPK" are not used interchangeably for the purpose of our discussion. In the sense of the word, Kenzie is done with "preschool" and next year will be in "VPK". Eek! That's not allowed. Kenzie's first official year in school is now done. She is one year older, one year wiser, one year more stubborn. It's crazy for us to think back that just a few short months ago we were going to her Meet the Teacher day and we were both having some major anxiety about our baby going to school. I remember the first day of school plain as day. I thought she might have some apprehension. Nope. None. I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Kenzie went in like she owned the place. There was a day that her teacher mentioned that Kenzie was one of the quiet ones in the class and rarely spoke. I'm still not sure that she was thinking of my Kenzie. Maybe I had been dropping of...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...
