Spring Happenings

While it feels like summer around here... it is technically still spring. Instead of making a bunch of different posts highlighting some of the things we have been doing around here lately, I figured we could condense it into one slightly longer post and get a bunch of info in there. =) This post might seem to jump around a bit just because it is difficult for me to think of all that we have going on because we have been crazy busy.

First off, we finally took our first beach trip of the year. Well, our first one that didn't involve us wearing pants and jackets. We met Uncle Rick and Aunt Danielle (my brother and sis-in-law) over at Cocoa Beach while they were on their honeymoon to spend some time with them. The kids loved it. Kenzie really loves sitting on the water's edge and digging. The water was pretty chilly so we couldn't convince her to go too far into it. Will is in the stage right now where he isn't too keen on walking in sand unless it is well packed so he mostly chose to sit at the water's edge himself and dig or dig while sitting in his chair under the tent. He did end up walking around some once he got more comfortable but it took him some time. We used to put water shoes on Kenzie at this age but then we had to break that habit so we have elected to let Will figure it out on his own without shoes. Our kids like to dig in the sand. No, they love to dig in the sand. Kenzie buried everyone's feet. It was fun. It was nice to just get back to the beach and spend some time with family.

We also broke out our kiddie pool and water table for the first time and the kids had a blast. We set up our tent in the driveway and had a redneck pool party. So fun. I think we were out there for a good 2 plus hours and didn't even realize it. The kids would hang out in the water all day if we let them. They LOVE it. We also had our first real pool visit. We actually met up with Steven's cousin (once removed or something like that...) and his family while they were in town visiting from Michigan. They were in a timeshare type house with its own pool so we went for a dip while we were visiting. Kenzie's swimming lessons are paying off. She didn't actually swim, but she spent a really long time in the water and didn't need us right there with her to feel comfortable. At some point we both actually changed back into clothes and she kept right on playing in the water with her cousins (twice removed? Yeah, we couldn't quite figure it out.) Will enjoyed it too but because we have to be right on top of him the entire time, we eventually pulled him away and let him eat (and eat and eat) to keep him busy and away from the water. We had pizza, ice cream, and some park time before we left so it was an awesome visit. I think it is going to be warm enough for our community's pool soon so we are going to try to spend a lot more time up there.

We did a Disney trip last minute when we met up with the same aforementioned cousins. We spent a bit of time with them and then we all did some stuff on our own and met up again for a couple of rides and then the light show on the castle and the Wishes fireworks. This was the first time the kids have seen Wishes as it typically happens pretty late (for a 3 and 1 year old). It was fun but it was way past bed time. Will took a siesta for about an hour and a half leading up to everything and then stayed awake for the fireworks. Kenzie somehow stayed awake until we left Disney property. We don't know how she did it. The day was jam packed! She woke up at 6:30am, had swimming lessons (which is detailed here if you want to read more about that), we went to Will's recheck for his ear infection, got lunch at the mall and THEN went to Disney. She went from her wake up time in the morning until about 11pm without a single nap. Crazy kid. The day at Disney was packed, too. For a last minute trip, we did A LOT. We got to the park right as the parade was starting so we caught the parade in Adventureland before we met up with family. Then we rode Jungle Cruise and the carousel. We ended up going into Mickey's Philharmagic which was Kenzie's first 3D "movie" and she seemed to like it. We split up after that and did Winnie the Pooh before dinner. Then we had Fastpasses for Pirates. While sitting at dinner we were able to make a last minute fastpass for meeting Tinkerbell. Tink is one of Kenzie's current favorites and we are doing a Tink birthday party this year (last minute change from our original plan but she is obsessed) so she was excited to meet her. Will... not so much. Must be more of a Periwinkle kind of guy. ;) Then we met back up with family and a group of them went on Astro Orbiter. Not before Will had a major blowout though and ended up wearing just a shirt and diaper for the remainder of our trip. Luckily, it was getting late so he was good with me wearing him and he fell asleep. (I forgot to mention that as we were getting out of the car at Disney we realized that Kenzie took her shoes off on the ride down and we were short a sock. It was on her when we left the mall so we have NO IDEA where it is at this point. So, she went all day with 1 sock on and 1 sock off. Our kids just wanted to be missing parts of their clothing apparently.) We went on the People Mover after that and then set up shop to wait on the light show and fireworks. It is crazy to think we somehow fit all that in one afternoon/evening, but the parks were not crowded at all. We are getting ready to hit our blackout dates for the summer so we have one more trip planned in a couple of weeks that will come with its own post because we have some fun stuff planned for it. It's already getting too hot to be out at Disney all day so I don't think we will mind having blackouts. We didn't use our passes last summer anyway so we saved the money this year and elected to get the Silver pass. I would rather be at the beach over the summer anyway. =)

We also hit up the Apopka Art and Foliage Festival. This is a pretty big festival that happens every year and we haven't actually been to it before. It was pretty nice though. Kenzie immediately zoned in on a bow display and we purchased her a couple of new bows for her collection. One was princesses and one HAD to be the ballerina one. She is obsessed with dancing right now and thinks she is quite the ballerina. (She is still loving dance, by the way so this was the perfect bow.) Then we went into the butterfly tent where you get to feed butterflies. We were worried that Kenzie (or Will) might get upset if a butterfly landed on them, but neither ended up caring. Kenzie turned out to be the butterfly whisperer and at some point had 4 on her. She thought it was awesome. Will just hung around on my back and took it all in. He was okay with having one put on his head though so he didn't seem to mind them either. We looked at all the plants and, if we had more space, probably would have purchased a few. There was an awesome selection. There were quite a few booths selling crafts and everything, too. It was a really nice festival and next year we will go armed with some plans for adding some foliage to our home.

It seems like so long ago, but less than a month ago I ran my first 5k. I'm keeping up with the running but still just going at my own pace. Some days are harder than others. Some days I don't want to get out of bed in the morning (but I'm always happy I did it after I go). Steven and I are talking about finding a 5k to do together now. His pace is significantly faster than mine so he would leave me behind if he did some training, but we aren't even sure which one we want to run at this point. If anyone has a recommendation, let me know. I think we are looking for a straight 5k. No obstacle courses or anything at this point. My goal would just be to beat my PR and Steven would just like to do one himself. Also, the bling is always a bonus so medal races are awesome. Haha!

I mentioned Kenzie's ballerina bow. She is still taking (and loving) dance. She has just 2 more months of lessons before the recital. This is the last month of everyone (including those not doing the recital) being in class before it turns to only those in the recital. So, they do ballet every lesson and then alternate tap and tumbling each week. I don't know if those will continue once they switch to only recital kiddos or if they will only do ballet and rehearse the recital number. She got her costume for the recital and I think it is the prettiest (and most adorable at the same time) thing I have ever seen. The girls all look so precious. We are all really excited for the recital in June.

Kenzie is also doing swimming, like I mentioned before. She is doing so great this year! She didn't shed a single tear at her last lesson. Last year she would cry some because she experienced some fear but she is just getting better and better.

Will isn't in any lessons or anything right now because, well, he's 18 months old. I can't imagine trying to do something super organized with him right now. It would be like herding cats. He is just loving life. Give the kid a playground or let him outside to play in the driveway and he is a happy camper.

I think that is about all that is going on around here lately. We have not had a free weekend to sit around and do nothing in weeks and there isn't one on the horizon anytime soon. I have been working some and then when I am not working, we are getting some family time in and what-not. It's been a hectic few weeks over the last month or so but we are enjoying our time spent together. It's only going to get crazier over the next month. There is a week when Steven is slated to be out of town for work so I will be winging it on my own. That week we have dance, 3 swimming lessons, school, Kenzie's dentist appointment, and then hopefully a nap and a run to decompress for me thrown in somewhere in there because I am going to need them both. We'll make it. I hope. Haha!

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Preschool Done.... One Step Closer to MIT

So, here it is. The end of "preschool." Note: "Preschool" and "VPK" are not used interchangeably for the purpose of our discussion. In the sense of the word, Kenzie is done with "preschool" and next year will be in "VPK". Eek! That's not allowed. Kenzie's first official year in school is now done. She is one year older, one year wiser, one year more stubborn. It's crazy for us to think back that just a few short months ago we were going to her Meet the Teacher day and we were both having some major anxiety about our baby going to school. I remember the first day of school plain as day. I thought she might have some apprehension. Nope. None. I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Kenzie went in like she owned the place. There was a day that her teacher mentioned that Kenzie was one of the quiet ones in the class and rarely spoke. I'm still not sure that she was thinking of my Kenzie. Maybe I had been dropping of...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...
