Friday Favorites: Little Artist Edition

After some time off from our weekly Friday Favorites style post, I decided it was time to bring it back but with a slight change of format. This idea came to me when the kids wanted to make a marker this week and I thought that this was a super cool product that I would like to share with everyone. I've shared products before randomly and will continue to do so likely in other posts if the need comes up but Friday Favorites will now be a dedicated weekly post for a specific product or two that our family is really into right now.

I don't use affiliate links, though I did think about it. I don't know that I would post enough products or that the products I choose to link would be enough to sustain creating the affiliate links. However, I know I have some friends that do this, so if you have any tips or think it could be worth it, please send me an email or message on FB and give me some insight. ;)

Anyway...

This week the kids insisted that we make a few new markers. The Crayola Marker Maker is a super cool contraption that Kenzie was given as a Christmas present this year from our neighbors. Kenzie is ridiculously into all things art right now. The kids spends hours drawing, coloring, painting, cutting, gluing... you get the idea. She tells us that she is our little artist and apparently believes she is the best artist in the family (and she very well might be). She is also really into science type projects. So, a gift like this was right up her alley.

We have made a few markers in the last few months and are almost done with our first set of possible markers to make so we will be purchasing a refill kit soon, I'm sure. This kit initially started as the wacky tips kit but there are various options you can buy. Kenzie actually loves all the weird tips for the markers. She has three or four "dark purple" colors but they are all different tips, so they are technically all different. Haha!

Everything you need to make markers is included starting with a list of possible color combinations recommended.

Once you decide on your color, you get to be a "scientist" as Kenzie puts it and put the ink drops into the little measuring things before adding the part of the marker that soaks up the ink. I'm sure there is a technical term for that... but I don't know what it is. This is Kenzie's favorite part. I haven't gotten to the point yet that I let her do the ink alone because I have spilled it a couple of times and I have a feeling that she would definitely spill it. It is washable, but still not worth risking. I let her add the marker center ink soaker upper thing though with these cute tweezers that come in the kit.

Once all the ink is soaked up, you transfer the ink holder thing (I really should learn the name of that) to the marker that you already put your selected tip in. I didn't take a picture of that part, but the directions are easy to follow. There is a special part in the kit that holds it upright in preparation for attaching the marker bottom. I even let Will help with that part usually but you have to be careful to not drop the center because the ink can get everywhere.

The next part is Will's favorite. You put the plastic bottom on the marker and use the kit to seal it all up.

Then you cap the marker and sit it with the tip down to make the ink flow into it. In about 3 minutes, you have a marker with your custom color! Kenzie always tests the color then she chooses what to call it. You write it on these cute labels and attach to the marker. The kit even comes with marker boxes to put your markers in that you can decorate.

When I was grabbing links for this post I found out there is a pastel refill. I think we will get that one next once we run out of marker pieces in the initial kit.

If you have a little artist, we cannot recommend this highly enough. Kenzie loves to use the markers she created. So much fun!

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Our New "Normal"

Wow. That's all I have to say about life right now. 2020 has been crazy. Back at the beginning of this year I made a chalkboard art that said something about ushering in the "roaring 20's," to which my ever positive husband replied something about 1920 having a plague (I see you, Spanish Flu) and we probably didn't want that to happen again. Fast forward to April... and we are all confined to our homes with the exception of leaving for groceries, medical needs, and exercise because of... a pandemic. (Insert facepalm emoji here... but I'm on a laptop so I don't have one of those.) This has been a crazy start to a new year. I am still having trouble wrapping my head around what has gone on over the last month or so for our country, our world, and our family. Here's what we should be doing... both kids should be in school today. Steven would likely be sitting in a water plant in Melbourne counting down the hours until he got to come home because he had ...
