Happy Love Day!

Happy Valentine's Day! I have mentioned in earlier blogs that we usually don't do much for this holiday. We never really went to dinner or anything. We might cook something special at home and get each other something small. When we had kids, we started getting them a few small things and continued to make a special meal. This year was no different. Kenzie was confused why everyone had school and work on Valentine's Day but she was still excited about the idea of a Valentine's Day party at her school so I guess she was okay with it.

To start celebrating Valentine's Day, this year Kenzie and Steven got to visit with Julie, Eric, Evie, Grandma, and Grandaddy since Julie, Eric, and Evie were in town on their Disney vacay. Unfortunately, Will and I didn't get to go because the morning of the day we were supposed to visit, he finally came down with the crazy virus that Kenzie had last week. We totally thought we were in the clear with this one but it is a doozy and reared its ugly head once again. He ended up running a pretty high fever and we couldn't risk directly exposing anyone else to that sickness (though we had already managed to get Grandma and Grandaddy exposed since they were watching the kids that morning while Steven and I ran but that was before we knew he was sick and still totally thought we were in the clear). We are just hoping that everyone else stays well because we are on day 4 of Will having it and (like Kenzie) he is still pretty bad. Ugh.  Kenzie and Steven had a great time visiting though. Julie, Eric, and Evie gave each kid a monogrammed shirt and fun cup with their names on them which I can't get them to stop using. Steven was given a cool Dolphins beer mug that said  "Daddy Established 7/30/12 and 10/14/14". Super cute. They gave me a glass coffee mug that says "Craft Your Stress Away" which is perfect. I love coffee and I truly do craft my stress away sometimes. Steven and Kenzie were able to go over to the Polynesian with them, ride on the monorails all over Disney property (though I don't think that was entirely planned like that) and then have Dole Whip. I totally forgot about the fact that the Polynesian had Dole Whip until they headed there. I have decided that one of these days we are going to go over there and watch the fireworks from the beach and have some Dole Whip. Best. Dessert. Ever. Will and I were sad to miss out and especially sad because we don't see Julie, Eric, and Evie nearly enough but we know there will be other opportunities so we will just have to hope everyone is well for next time. Such is life with kids.

This year Kenzie made some special Valentine's. We bought the normal lollipop ones for her classmates and dance friends but she decided she wanted to craft some actual Valentines for some special people. So, together we made some kitty cat Valentines for Evie, her dance teacher, dance teacher helper, and her two teachers at school. She really enjoyed making these. We had a good time doing it. We did it during a Will nap one day so we had some fun time just the two of us. She also did a great job writing everyone's name on the envelopes. Plus, she had to write her name over and over and over again on every Valentine she had. It took a while but she did a great job.

She also got to decorate her "mailbox" for her Valentines Day party at school. I admit, it was hard for me not to take over and micromanage her but other than wrapping the box and helping her draw a few hearts where she told me she wanted them, I knew this needed to be her. So we broke out all the Valentine related crafting stuff I could find in our house and she went to town. She was super excited with the outcome. She apparently has a bit of a heart obsession. Haha!

Will and Kenzie together (with a good amount of my help) also made some fun Valentines for some of the family. We haven't yet given them to a few family members so I'm not going to describe those or include a pic. =) Kenzie also wanted Will to have a Valentine so she wrote out one of her Olaf ones for him. She is so sweet.

Dance fell the day before Valentine's Day so we took that opportunity to perfect Kenzie's heart hair for this year. She loved it and I must admit... it actually turned out pretty cute. She wore it again to school today for Valentine's Day. She loved giving her friends at dance little Valentine's and they all seemed so excited to get one.

On Valentine's Day, Kenzie had her Valentine's Day party at school. They did crafts, decorated cookies (and ate them), and had a lot of fun. Kenzie loved telling me about delivering her Valentine's cards and about all the fun things she was given. Her favorite was probably the card that turned into a kitty mask. She wore it most of the afternoon. She also made a card for Daddy, Will, and me. She drew a cute family portrait on the inside. I love that kid. Her teachers asked everyone in the class what love is and then wrote their answers on hearts on their bulletin board. Kenzie's was "Love is making new friends." which is totally a Kenzie answer.

Usually we would give the kids their Valentines in the morning but it fell on Tuesday this year and the kids are not always awake before Steven leaves for work. Okay, they often are but not always so we decided to just go ahead and wait until dinner. We hit up the Target Dollar Spot a few weeks ago to pick up a few little things for them. Everything was a hit.

Steven also always wants to get Kenzie flowers for Valentine's Day. I love that he wants her to know how special she is so he goes out of his way to do this for her. She loves, loves, loves flowers too and getting them from Daddy is the best so she was so excited. I also think it is super important for her Daddy to show her how she should be treated. No, I don't mean that whoever she chooses as a life partner needs to buy her flowers all the time but rather that she needs to be respected and loved. While I'm on the topic, I also think he has an important job to show Will how he needs to treat women and respect them (as well as anyone else) so seeing him do these things for Kenzie or me is important. Okay, off the soapbox now. Because Steven got Kenzie the flowers and didn't want Will to be left out, he also picked up a fishing pole for Will. We knew we wanted to get him one sometime soon anyway because he has been really interested any time we have gone fishing and he didn't have one yet. Ours are too big for him so he needed something for himself. He was pretty excited. I'm hoping we can find some time to use them soon. We are considering getting an annual pass to the Florida State Park system if we can fit it in the monthly budget so maybe we can do that this weekend and head back over to our local state park, Wekiwa Spring State Park to see if we can catch anything again. Kenzie loves fishing now. Or so she thinks. Really, it's mainly because she actually caught something. Haha! Will was so excited and kept saying, "My fishing pole? I have fishing pole?" like he wasn't sure if it was actually his.

The kids and I made Steven a picture to put on his desk at work. Both kids have a few things they really love. Kenzie is our little dancer and Will is super into trains so we made him a picture that says "Daddy, we love you more than..." with a picture of Kenzie dancing and Will playing with his train. Kenzie wrote "We Love Daddy" on the frame which I think makes it that much more special.

Steven got me an insulated cup. Like a Yeti (which is what Steven has) but another brand because there must be about 100 different ones now. Mine is awesome too because it is a pink ombre. And that makes me happy. I love Steven's and am so glad to have my own now. =)

We also did our normal "special" dinner tonight. Like last year, we decided to bring back a favorite dinner. This was an iffy thing for us because we didn't actually know if Will would even eat anything. He has been so sick for the last 4 days that we didn't know so we decided to make the kids' favorite dinner. Breakfast. To "Valentines" it up though we decided to add in some pink pancakes. Yum! Well, we mostly thought they were yum. Will wasn't so sure. He refused to eat them but he hasn't eaten much lately anyway since he's been sick. He didn't let his sickness hold him back from some bacon though. He basically ate his weight in it. Or so it seemed. Kenzie ate a ton. She loves breakfast food.

We had a great Valentine's Day (despite one kid being on the tail end of a yucky virus). Every year is more and more fun with this holiday. Like I said, we don't go crazy with it but every year the kids are more and more into crafts and making things for others. They both seem to like to spread the love.

I'm one lucky girl. I have not one, not even two, but three super special, sweet Valentines. Happy Valentine's Day from the Youngs.

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Preschool Done.... One Step Closer to MIT

So, here it is. The end of "preschool." Note: "Preschool" and "VPK" are not used interchangeably for the purpose of our discussion. In the sense of the word, Kenzie is done with "preschool" and next year will be in "VPK". Eek! That's not allowed. Kenzie's first official year in school is now done. She is one year older, one year wiser, one year more stubborn. It's crazy for us to think back that just a few short months ago we were going to her Meet the Teacher day and we were both having some major anxiety about our baby going to school. I remember the first day of school plain as day. I thought she might have some apprehension. Nope. None. I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Kenzie went in like she owned the place. There was a day that her teacher mentioned that Kenzie was one of the quiet ones in the class and rarely spoke. I'm still not sure that she was thinking of my Kenzie. Maybe I had been dropping of...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...
