Road Trip! Day 3 - Mississippi (Vicksburg)

Our Sunday started pretty early. We were watching the weather for the week or so leading up to our trip and didn't know if our Sunday would go as we planned, but we wanted to try to continue with our plans despite it being a fairly yucky, gray, rainy day.

We got up early and had breakfast in the lobby. After breakfast we decided to head over to Vicksburg to visit the Vicksburg National Military Park. I have visited this park a few times before and wanted Steven to see it. Plus, I thought it might be fun to go over and have a look at the Old Vicksburg Bridge while we were over there and thought Kenzie might enjoy that. That also lets us show the kids the Mississippi River and let Steven see it in Mississippi (he has seen it in other states before, I think). The drive was uneventful. We left Kenzie in my parents' car again. That means we actually had a fairly peaceful drive as Will slept most of it and we didn't have anyone trying to play 20 questions with us.

When we got the the park it was still very gray but the rain had ceased. The downfall is that this ended up being the coldest weather we have been out in all season. It was actually colder when we left our house on Friday morning, but we didn't have to be outside in that. The military park is actually a drive and you can get out (you can also hike it so you don't have to be in a car) to see different things. We started at the information center where Joe made a few locals a bit angry... or annoyed... or something as he promptly declared that everyone in Mississippi must have a Vitamin D deficiency. To his defense... we hadn't seen the sun since Pensacola on Friday. Kenzie was lacking in appropriate clothing. What do you want from a true Florida girl? So, Nana found everything in her car that might work as clothing and put it on Kenzie. Poor kid. She looked ridiculous but I think she thought it was funny. We showed Kenzie the cannons and took a few pictures before getting back in the cars and starting the 16 (or maybe it was 18?) mile drive through the park.

I just... can't. This kid.
Will is in there somewhere...

Do i even need to tell everyone what Joe is doing? Would we expect anything
less from the man that offended everyone in the info station?

Steven and I enjoyed reading through the information provided at each marker along the way. Kenzie apparently spent a lot of time asking Nana and Papa why none of the men (bust statues) had arms or legs. Later she informed me that they had no arms, no legs, no bellies, and no belly buttons. Thanks, Papa for that. She is still talking about it and asked me this week why one of her Little People princesses also had no legs. Unfortunately, because of the cold and gray weather we didn't get great pictures and I refused to get out too often to take many other pictures.

After driving through the park we headed over to the the Old Vicksburg Bridge. The train happened to be crossing the bridge when we go there so Kenzie thought that was pretty cool. We went up to the higher point to take a few pictures (in the cold) before hopping back into the car and making our way to lunch. We had to try a few different places before we ended up at Shoneys. I had big plans to have this cajun inspired lunch but didn't take into account that it was a Sunday in a small town and most places were closed.

After lunch we went to my Aunt Susan's house to spend some time with family. Kenzie was able to play with Addy again and they had a great time. We spent a couple of hours there before heading back to the hotel. We had dinner and went back to the hotel so that we could start packing up in preparation for our return trip on Monday.

We spent a few hours in the hotel debating if we should leave early, leave late, or how we should handle our return drive because there was a call for freezing rain early on Monday morning. We eventually decided to tough it out and take our chances leaving about 7am (central time). As it turns out, the freezing rain was pushed back to the afternoon and it all worked out. That's a story for another time though. Stay tuned!

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Preschool Done.... One Step Closer to MIT

So, here it is. The end of "preschool." Note: "Preschool" and "VPK" are not used interchangeably for the purpose of our discussion. In the sense of the word, Kenzie is done with "preschool" and next year will be in "VPK". Eek! That's not allowed. Kenzie's first official year in school is now done. She is one year older, one year wiser, one year more stubborn. It's crazy for us to think back that just a few short months ago we were going to her Meet the Teacher day and we were both having some major anxiety about our baby going to school. I remember the first day of school plain as day. I thought she might have some apprehension. Nope. None. I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Kenzie went in like she owned the place. There was a day that her teacher mentioned that Kenzie was one of the quiet ones in the class and rarely spoke. I'm still not sure that she was thinking of my Kenzie. Maybe I had been dropping of...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...
