13 Weeks to 13 Miles! OUC Orlando Half Marathon Training: Week 8

It's happened! We have officially made it more than halfway through the training plan and that means the OUC Half Marathon is now closer than ever. Obviously. That's how time works. Anyway, this is a week that requires 16 total miles and a whole lot of my time... but here we go!

Wednesday
Plan: 4 Miles, Actual: 4.11 Miles
So, to start... the weather still stinks. Seriously stinks for fall. So much humidity. It doesn't even seem to matter what the temperature is because the humidity makes every run so much harder than it needs to be. It takes your breath away. Today was slightly cooler than last week's runs and I could feel that in the air... but the humidity stole away any added reprieve from the lower temp. Also, when I say "lower", I mean not 80 degrees at 5 am. Nope. It was 77 degrees. Still ridiculous. We are supposed to be seeing some cooler weather (60 degree morning temps) this weekend so I'm holding out hope for that. But not much hope. This run wasn't necessarily difficult, but I was slow and I didn't feel great about it overall. My overall pace was 13:43 with my fastest mile at 13:13. Eh. Some days I have it all go right for me and some days I have trouble even running for a minute straight after about two miles because I'm just not feeling it. This was one of those days. I ended up going slightly farther than necessary for this run for one reason and one reason only... I wanted to hit 50+ miles in the month of October and if I only did 4 miles even, I would have been about .07 miles short. I ended up going a little above that just to make sure I hit the 50 mile mark. I closed out October with 50.1 miles. And that is only a fraction of next month's total mileage... so there's that.

Friday
Plan: 4 Miles, Actual: 4.01 Miles
Yeah... so I'm totally not into this whole changing days with Steven thing. I like my Fridays to relax and not get up early to do anything. So waking up at 5am to run wasn't at the top of my want to do list for the day. Unfortunately though, it was at the top of my I need to do list. So I did. But I wasn't happy about it. Usually I would get to wake up a bit later on Friday, too because Steven often works from home or takes off on Fridays if he has fulfilled enough hours (or to burn PTO because the man never takes actual PTO off and is getting ready to use it or lose it)... but he was behind at work and had to go into the office. So, I was up at 5am. So fun. Not really. The weather was not as bad as it has been... but it wasn't great. It was tolerable. 4 miles didn't feel like 40 so there is that. My overall pace has definitely settled right around 13:30 or so and I'm good with that. There are sometimes mile split outliers but those are becoming few and far between. Steven always asks me if I want to be faster. And I can honestly say that isn't my goal. My goal is miles at this point. So I'm perfectly good with a 13:30 or so pace. I have it figured that even at a 14 minute overall pace, I could finish a half in just barely over 3 hours. I can't guarantee that will happen... but we shall see. All that matters is that I'm feeling good after my runs and I'm getting stronger overall.

Sunday
Plan: 8 Miles, Actual: 8 Miles
Woohoo!!! This run actually set a new record for me as my longest run ever. It was actually my longest continuous run since my old goal of something like 6.4 miles. Last week's run was 7 miles... but it wasn't continuous. The weather was PERFECT!! I was loving the 64 degree temp and relatively low humidity. The extra hour for daylight savings also helped me out immensely as I had to get up at 4:30am (old 5:30) to finish this run before Steven had to leave for church. Next week won't be so easy when I have to sing AND go another mile than I did for this run so I will probably be getting up around 4 without a time change to help me out. Anyway, my mile splits were all relatively even this run which made me pretty happy. They ranged from 13:18 (Miles 1 & 5) to 13:47 (Mile 8) and my overall pace was exactly 13:30. While I didn't necessarily want to go any farther this morning, I definitely felt like I could. I'm hoping that by the time the half rolls around, the weather has settled into this cooler pattern. I could take a bit cooler even because the race will be run after the sun comes up. Today I finished with it coming up but I know a blazing sun can cause me some issues so I'm hoping December 7 is either cloudy or cooler so compensate for the sun. I kept my weird loop for the most part for this run. I did hear later that had I run the route Steven did the day before, it is very likely I would have seen our neighborhood bear. I'm still unsure if I want to run into him while running. We only have 3 long runs left before the half and I'm sort of looking forward to winding down. I feel like I never see Steven anymore. We are either going to bed early in prep for getting up to run or falling asleep because we have been up since before the sun, run, and then worked a full day (yes... I do work ... just not in an office). I'm also looking forward to seeing all this come to fruition and finishing a half marathon. I bought a half shirt weeks ago that I'm waiting to wear... better believe I'm wearing it Saturday afternoon after finishing the race.

Weekly Training Miles: 16.12
Total Training Miles: 90.89

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Preschool Done.... One Step Closer to MIT

So, here it is. The end of "preschool." Note: "Preschool" and "VPK" are not used interchangeably for the purpose of our discussion. In the sense of the word, Kenzie is done with "preschool" and next year will be in "VPK". Eek! That's not allowed. Kenzie's first official year in school is now done. She is one year older, one year wiser, one year more stubborn. It's crazy for us to think back that just a few short months ago we were going to her Meet the Teacher day and we were both having some major anxiety about our baby going to school. I remember the first day of school plain as day. I thought she might have some apprehension. Nope. None. I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Kenzie went in like she owned the place. There was a day that her teacher mentioned that Kenzie was one of the quiet ones in the class and rarely spoke. I'm still not sure that she was thinking of my Kenzie. Maybe I had been dropping of...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...
