This weekend (after a weekend hiatus) we resumed our Spring Happenings list. It was also Easter weekend so we were pretty jam packed with things to do!
We started on Friday. Steven is still working a lot lately. I feel like that is becoming a common theme but we all do what we need to do and we still luck out that he can take some time off because of the extra hours he puts in. Friday was also Will's half birthday. Usually we take the kids to Cici's around their half birthday and birthdays because it is one of their favorite places but we just went last week with Nana and Aunt Danielle so we didn't want to do that again. Plus, we had church for Good Friday in the evening and Steven was doing tech for the service so we knew it would be too late by the time we got out to make it to Cici's. Instead of all that, we decided on the beach! What better way to celebrate a half birthday (or any day really) than a morning at the beach?? I don't think there is one. Our beach babies would agree. (Reason #6 we will never leave Florida: Beach days any day of the year.) I was also ready to get away from this house. We have been dealing with the effects of our lightning strike last week and I have been at home A LOT lately between getting everything put together for the claim and having people come out to look at various things that need to be fixed. It was time to get away and enjoy some much needed family time. I am so looking forward to this summer when we go to the Keys because we will get our family time for a week straight with no interruptions. Side note: Right as we got to the beach, I got a call from the adjuster for our claim and everything was approved so we just have to wait for a check and then I can schedule all the repairs. I hope to be fully functional in the next week.
I want to mention Thursday though before I go any farther. Thursday evening Steven ran the IOA 5k with his office. Well, with some people from his office. This is actually the first 5k I ever participated in back in 2011 but I walked it with the OCPS School Psychs. Last year we talked about doing it together because he can get his entry paid through work (though I would have still had to pay) but we didn't do it because it was right around Iron Girl as it always is. This year, because I returned to Iron Girl, he decided to do it. I admit... I was a bit jealous. Haha! I love racing. The thing about the IOA Corporate 5k is that it is MASSIVE!! There were 17,500 participants or so this year. It's actually called Orlando's Largest Office Party but I have heard (though I can't verify it) that it is one of the largest 5k's in the Southeast. So, on a short course you sometimes end up in a large crowd. There were so many people that I watched the Live feed on Facebook for about 7 to 8 minutes (though I caught it after the gun so I missed some people coming through the start line anyway) and when it ended there were still runners coming through. I scanned the crowd through the video for Steven's aqua Dolphins hat that he usually wears but I never caught sight of it. I watched at the finish line too but never caught sight of him. He said he sat for almost 15 minutes before he finally started moving towards the finish line. I did hear that there were 51 OCPS schools represented. Steven texted me when he finished and he finished in 34:53. He said he was just running for the beer at the end. He said it was a gorgeous night at Lake Eola. He had a good time and did really well. Now, we are ready for next weekend when we run the Star Wars 10k. Recap will follow the run. Steven is even thinking he will run with me (which is something we NEVER do) so that we can experience it together since this might be one of the only Disney races we do (more on that in an upcoming post about next race season).
Friday morning we packed up and headed out to.... the beach!!! Yay! While the water is still cold, I am so excited that beach weather has returned. I will gladly sit on the beach and only go knee deep in water just to be at the beach. Honestly, we go sometimes in cold weather too. We just wear jackets but we take any excuse to be at the beach. We originally thought we wanted to return to Ponce Inlet but Steven didn't make it home until pretty late after the 5k and we didn't have enough time to make sure we had everything ready to go. Instead, we elected to hit up the old standy-by, Lori Wilson in Cocoa Beach. The only real downfall to this beach for us is that the water tends to be pretty rough and Will loves the beach but still isn't into rough water. He loves when it is calmer but Cocoa Beach is naturally a rougher beach. He will get used to it. We just have to wait him out. Unfortunately, it was also high tide which meant the water seemed even crazier than normal because it was coming in and then at its peak while we were there. Kenzie still loved it. She was wading into it. Neither Steven nor I wore suits but we put suits on both kids knowing that they would get messy and likely wet. Will sat near the water's edge playing with his bucket and shovel but he also liked it under the tent. We were able to try out the new wagon that Steven was given for Christmas. It was great! While it was still not super easy to push through soft sand, we made it in one trip and it was easier overall. Also, the wagon was able to serve as an anchor for us. It was WINDY and we were worried about our tent being taken over but we tied it down to the wagon and had no issues, at all. It was great. We sat on the beach for a couple of hours periodically wandering down to the water but mostly just playing in the sand. We had packed sandwiches so we had a picnic on the beach. Luckily, Will was in a great mood this time and no chairs were thrown during lunch. Shortly after lunch we packed it all up and headed out. We wanted to stop by Ron Jon's on the way home but we knew Will would likely be getting tired. While at Ron Jon's, we took a picture next to the surfboards that we took pictures at right about a year ago to compare them. I can't believe how much they have changed. They are getting so big. We were back in the car not much later and Will fell asleep fairly easily. Kenzie talked all the way home. Nothing new.
Once home we had to get ready to head back out for Good Friday service at church. Steven had to go early because he was running lyrics but we went up a little early too so we could see him. The service was really nice. I had to remove Kenzie once because she was not making very good choices. We had a bit of a talking to out in the hallway and she did better after that. I am also super thankful for a church family that is so patient and loving. Some of our church family members in the row behind us (that sit behind us every week so we know them) were keeping the kids busy for part of the service which was helpful because I had both kids alone since Steven was busy. Will has never had so many high fives, I think. In all honesty, I can't blame the kids. I enjoyed the service and the message but I could see how a 4 and 2 year old might get bored. Kenzie danced to a lot of the music, but during the reading about Passover and the reading in Hebrew, she had a harder time sitting still. This is actually becoming more common as she gets a bit older and more likely to exercise her independence and show off some. We just try to hold strong and follow through with her. We are making it a day at a time. But I digress. Steven was able to come and take communion with us, which is always nice. Kenzie told us all about breaking bread and what it and the wine mean. She was killing me during worship. She asked me why people sometimes raise their hands during worship and I explained that it is a way of praising God. So, she decided she wanted to do the same. It was so precious.
After church we headed over to Tijuana Flats for a late dinner. The kids were starving and ate a ton. A nice woman stopped and told us that she saw us a church and the kids were adorable. We had a nice dinner out on the patio at TF before heading home and getting the kids in bed. It was a long day.
Saturday was our busy, busy, busy day. I was supposed to run but ended up skipping it. I'm glad I did too because for the next hour or so, I periodically checked my phone for giraffe updates. Haha! Anytime April the Giraffe looked to be pushing, I called Kenzie in and we sat glued to my phone screen. We were both able to see the baby be born. It was pretty cool. Kenzie thought it was awesome. Anytime we were watching and not much was happening, she would chant, "Have that baby! Have that baby!" over and over again. We were able to see it though and it was just awesome. Then, it was a fairly quick turn around to make it up to the common area in our neighborhood for the annual egg hunt. The kids loved it. This year, Will was much more into it. Last year he didn't do much and was more interested in a bunny on a little pole hanging thing but this year, he made a beeline for the farther part of the area to grab eggs. He was cracking me up because each egg he grabbed, he would shake and listen to make sure he heard something inside it. Kenzie, on the other hand, was like a little machine. We joked later that our video of her picking up eggs plays almost like it is in fast forward... but it isn't. She was just on a roll. After the hunt, the kids played with some sidewalk chalk and bubbles before we had to head out because Kenzie and I had big plans.
This was the day that we were planning to go to the Orlando Shakespeare Theater to see Pinkilicious. Kenzie was so excited. I had a coupon from the library that Kenzie got for checking out 5 books one day but it had to be used on tickets for a same day showing so we had to get down to the theater to buy tickets when the box office opened. We left Daddy and Will at home (though they did have some boy time and went to lunch, Lowes, and Home Depot while we were gone as well as make a stop at Winn Dixie after nap to help me out). Kenzie and I stopped and picked up Wendy's on the way downtown then went over to the theater. Getting tickets was no problem and we took our lunch over to the lake next door to have a picnic lunch in front of the water. It was a lot of fun. I feel like I rarely get Mommy/Daughter time much anymore for more than a few minutes and we very rarely get to go out and do things. Some of my favorite memories with my mom are those times we had outside of the house together doing different things so I want to make those memories with Kenzie. Just like I want them with Will and I know Steven wants them with both kids. I think the one-on-one time is super important. Especially since there are two of them and so often we do things all together. They relish in that time with each of us alone. I'm sure Will loved his Daddy/Son time. The show was at 2:00 so we went in a little early to check out the theater. It was nice. I have never been to it. It is the perfect place for a smaller show. Before the show, a few of the actors came out in character and led the audience in some moving and shaking games. Kenzie loved it. Then they played music and a lot of the kids danced. I would like to say that I successfully shielded Kenzie from the Whip and Nae Nae song (or whatever it's called) until Saturday. She heard it, learned the dance by watching a few kids around her, and sang and danced to it all afternoon afterwards. Ugh. The show started right on time and was so cute! Kenzie loved it. It was a musical which helped to keep her attention and was only about an hour long with no intermission. She watched the last 15 minutes or so from my lap because she is just a mover and a shaker even when she is interested in something. Afterwards we were able to meet the cast. She got her program signed. I am the worst Mommy ever though and my phone was too dead to use the camera to get pictures of her. We spent too much time watching that giraffe in the morning. She still had a great time and loved her signed program (which I promptly took to put away in her memory box I plan to make one of these days and should probably get on soon). When we got home she wanted to tell Daddy all about it and show off her program.
Speaking of Daddy/Son time, I should mention that I don't think I am either kid's favorite any longer. Daddy is definitely the more fun one. When we got home, I was looking for help cleaning to prep for Easter on Sunday and instead this was happening. I'm fairly certain that thing has a weight limit...
After dinner we dyed our Easter eggs. This was the first year that Will was into it. Kenzie thinks it is awesome but Will didn't care much last year. This year, both of them were excited. Will was super into the purple and only seemed to care if we did one that color. Kenzie thought red was the greatest. It was a lot of fun. I enjoy how each year they get more and more involved in things and their little perspectives on what we are doing. It's fun.
Sunday was Easter. We started our morning quite early. Steven had to be at the amphitheater at about 6:30 to run lyrics during rehearsal. Because he left so early, I was up and getting ready too since I would need to get the kids out alone. Both kids woke up happy and were totally okay with me telling them that we would wait to check out Easter baskets until we got home from church since Daddy wasn't home. We don't make a huge deal about the Easter bunny so they were excited but okay with waiting. Thankfully.
We got to the amphitheater about 7:20 or so which let me sit them down with their milk and a doughnut during the band rehearsal before things got started. They ran around the area behind the seats of the amphitheater after eating and we visited with some of the other people we go to church with until it was time to start handing out bulletins. The worst part was that the bathroom was kind of far away and up a big hill... and Will announced he had to potty as people were starting to arrive. Then, Kenzie had to go as well since she heard him mention it. So, we had to race up the hill and back down. Thankfully, Grandma and Grandaddy had arrived at that point so they took the kids. Nana, Papa, Uncle Rick, and Aunt Danielle arrived shortly after. I stayed up by the booth near Steven through worship while the kids stayed with the grandparents in the front. Nana said that Kenzie was singing along and raising her little arms in worship. I wish I had seen it. The worship was awesome. I loved it. I went to sit with everyone during the sermon. Kenzie was being a bit of a wiggle worm but was being good. She was just moving a lot. At one point, I took her up to the grass where Rick and Danielle were hanging out but she eventually went back down to her seat. Will, on the other hand, sat perfectly during the entire thing. Grandma even remarked later that she doesn't think she has ever seen a 2 and a half year old so well behaved in that type of scenario. That is just Will though. He has been in the best mood lately overall and this caught him at a good time. He is our easy going one and (while active) he isn't as crazy as Kenzie as a whole. I'm just glad they were both good. The sermon was great, as well. I loved seeing the community come out for Easter to worship together. Such a great sight.
After church was over we headed back to our house. It was still a bit early so we had some snack like foods to hold us over to lunch. The kids checked out their gifts from the bunny when we got home and had a small egg hunt in the house since the bunny hides some eggs. Then they opened their gifts from everyone else. They were super excited.
We had lunch after that and the weather was amazing so we sat outside. Nana and I sat with the kids on the picnic table and everyone else remained on the porch. Well, Rick and Danielle ate inside but they came out to sit with everyone. It was really nice. We finished off our Easter lunch with an adorable (and super tasty) cake made by Danielle and decorated (mostly) by Rick. Or at least that is how he would describe the process.
After that, everyone headed home. We cleaned up some and let Will take a late nap while Kenzie did her new puzzle in her room. She knocked out 60 pieces like it was nothing so we think it's time to challenge her with triple digits. She loves her puzzles and Legos. Maybe a little engineer in the making, like her Daddy. She definitely didn't get her spatial skills from me.
We spent the late afternoon and early evening playing outside. Kenzie wanted to use her new game outside. It is that game with the velcro plate like things you hold in your hand and you throw a tennis ball back and forth and catch it on the velcro. Old school and she LOVED it. She was getting pretty good, too. It will be great on the beach. We just need to get Will a Nerf football or something now. The neighbors all came over with their kids eventually and, before we knew it, it was almost 7pm. We hadn't even eaten dinner yet so we fed the kids a late dinner and sent them to bed. It was a LONG day and we were all really tired.
This weekend was a lot of fun and was one of our busier weekends as far as what we planned at this point. Next weekend will be a lot of fun. The kids are going to my parents' house for the weekend and Steven and I have the Star Wars 10k on Saturday then a day at Disney planned before an evening of silence while the kids are gone and part of Sunday on our own before they return. They are going to have a blast with my parents, I'm sure and we are excited to have some alone time since we rarely get it.
Happy Easter everyone! We hope you had an amazing Easter weekend!
