3 1/2 Years

Kenzie's half birthday is upon us! Today, she celebrates her half birthday and is officially 3.5 years old. How did that happen???

At 3 1/2 years old, Kenzie....

.... Is around 40 inches tall and 33 pounds. Those are our estimates and (if correct), they make her about 86th percentile in height and 55th percentile in weight. That is about in line with what she has been for the last couple of years. She shot up in height at about 18 months and has stayed that way. She also seems to have evened out her weight right around the middle percentile. She is tall and thin though so her clothes are still weird. She needs 4T or 5T in pants and dresses and even wears kids' sizes at times instead of toddler but her waist easily fits into a 3t size. Good thing it should get warm again soon so we can go back to dresses and not have to worry about her waist. A plus to her size? She is officially tall enough to ride on 90% of the rides at Disney. Haha!

.... LOVES all things girly. Whether it's princesses, tutus (skirts), dresses, dress-up, hair bows, jewelry, or anything else you can think of that screams "GIRL!!", she loves it. We still have no idea how we ended up with such a girly-girl, but we wouldn't have it any other way. That doesn't mean she isn't our little football loving girl, though. She loves to watch with her Daddy and gets so excited when her "calls" are done. She is also a pro at singing the Miami Dolphins song and randomly busts it out when football comes on whether it is "her Dolphins" or not.

.... Is finally starting to leave the picky toddler stage. There are still quite a few things she refuses to eat (even though she used to like them), but she is getting better and better. Just a few months ago, we were still fighting her on any veggie. Now, she eats just about any of them. She still loves and prefers fruit and bread, but we can finally see a glint of light at the end of the tunnel.

.... Hasn't napped in almost a full year. I miss that sometimes. She just doesn't need them anymore and if she does nap (in the car), she typically takes a couple of hours to fall asleep at night.

.... Is rocking preschool. She is a superstar polite kiddo. Her teachers always tell us how well behaved, polite, and kind she is. She is learning letters and numbers and though I haven't started pushing them as much as I wanted to, we are going to be working a lot harder this coming summer on them in preparation for VPK next school year.

... Has the most AH-MAZ-ING blonde curls. I am seriously jealous. They get frizzy in our Florida weather, but once reigned in, they are just too cute. Her hair is darkening a bit and we imagine it will eventually no longer be blonde, but the curls alone are envy inducing.

.... Is sticker obsessed. If she has a sticker, she thinks she is the coolest person in the world. Thankfully, she also seems to understand that if she puts them on any furniture or walls, she is in major trouble so we are okay with her having them.

.... Loves to be outside. We HAVE to hit up at least one park per day if the weather is agreeable or she goes a bit stir crazy. She wakes up daily asking if we can go to the playground or park. She loves to slide. She isn't crazy about swinging, but no longer fears it. She would rather climb and slide.

.... Loves to play with her little brother. She is such a caring big sister and despite having normal spats, she loves to play with him. The two of them will roll around on the floor laughing hysterically for long periods of time. Their newest game since Will is now walk/running is to play tag. They laugh hysterically and she sometimes tells him, "Buddy! Let's get Momma now!" before they come chasing after me.

.... Still LOVES to read books. She is always asking one of us to read with her or she will spend time "reading" by herself. She pretends to do school or storytime with her stuffed animals during her "rest time" every day.

.... Is a Disney Junior girl. She will sit and watch TV (for a while... she knows her limit and if I am working on something and she gets bored, she turns the TV off) and prefers anything on Disney Junior. She also likes Wild Kratts, Daniel Tiger, and Curios George.

.... Loves music. She loves to play music with her instruments or the piano but also loves to dance. We have many, many dance parties in this house.

.... Knows her left from her right. She amazed us a couple of weeks ago when we realized she knew. We quiz her all the time and she is right around 95% of the time. Side note: Kenzie at 3-years-old is better than me at 31-years-old with this. Maybe that means she will have a much better sense of direction than me. We can hope. She can give directions to different places we go often using "right" and "left" and is generally correct. If she were taller, we could just teach her to drive and she would be off.

.... Makes friends everywhere she goes. She is so friendly that she could talk to anyone... and usually does. I overhear her at the park all the time talking to another child and saying, "Hi! My name is Kenzie. Want to play?" When we leave she tells me she has a new friend. It's adorable.

.... Wants to help with anything she can. If I am cleaning, she will ask to help. If I am cooking, she wants to help. She loves to build things and was actually a huge help to Daddy the other day when they put together a cabinet together. She will get her tool belt and tools out and have at it.

.... Runs and hops more than she walks. This kid has energy to spare! If I could harness it, I think we could go off the grid. She is one of the most active preschoolers I have ever met, but she knows when to slow down and can (mostly) do that when told.

.... Continues to amaze us with her vocabulary and verbal skills. The other day she randomly told me, "When I get bigger, I'm going to essentially be as tall as you, Momma."  Um, okay. Who taught her essentially? Also, hopefully she will be taller than me.

.... Has a heart of gold. She has the most amazing heart and spirit. She makes us so proud to be her parents.

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Preschool Done.... One Step Closer to MIT

So, here it is. The end of "preschool." Note: "Preschool" and "VPK" are not used interchangeably for the purpose of our discussion. In the sense of the word, Kenzie is done with "preschool" and next year will be in "VPK". Eek! That's not allowed. Kenzie's first official year in school is now done. She is one year older, one year wiser, one year more stubborn. It's crazy for us to think back that just a few short months ago we were going to her Meet the Teacher day and we were both having some major anxiety about our baby going to school. I remember the first day of school plain as day. I thought she might have some apprehension. Nope. None. I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Kenzie went in like she owned the place. There was a day that her teacher mentioned that Kenzie was one of the quiet ones in the class and rarely spoke. I'm still not sure that she was thinking of my Kenzie. Maybe I had been dropping of...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...
