Keys Vacation 2015 Day 2: South Florida

Before we recap the day, I feel that we should recap the night. Kenzie did well. Her and I slept in the guest bed at Mike and Sevie's house while Steven was sent to the couch. It just wasn't big enough for all of us. Once she fell asleep, which took about 1/2 an hour, she slept soundly most of the night with the exception of waking up once I came to bed. At that point she tried to have conversations with me for about 30 minutes. I ignored her and she went to sleep. Will on the other hand was a bit difficult. I say that like this is something out of the ordinary, but how he slept is actually not different from how he does periodically at home in his regular bed. He woke up twice after I put him down between 10 and 11:30. No big deal. I think his feet were cold. Then, he woke up at 2:30... and he stayed awake until 5. Any time I would lay him down he would cry. Thankfully, Mike and Sevie said they didn't really hear him and so while I was worried, I guess I didn't need to be. Once he went back to sleep at 5 though he slept until 8am.

That being said, Kenzie woke up about 7:30. She rolled over, leaned across me and said "Morning, Mommy! It's daytime!" Thanks, kid. I know. So... we were up. Once everyone was dressed and ready, we headed out for Pembroke Gardens. It is an outdoor mall that was built after Steven and I moved away. We got there before most stores opened but walked around for a while before hitting up the Carter's store and then going to The Brass Tap. While we were walking, Will fell asleep and I was able to sit down without waking him up so that was a plus (I was wearing him). Kenzie did remarkably well at the tap room. I did need to try to explain to her at some point what a tap room was. #parentingfail I even managed to have a mimosa. Kenie enjoyed the pretzels that Mike ordered. Will woke up while we were in there and talked to everyone nearby. He had a blast. Everyone kept remarking about what a happy baby he was.

After having a few drinks, we went to Sal's, an Italian restaurant for lunch. At this point Will had been awake for a couple of hours which is usually his limit, but he sat there, ate his pouch, and enjoyed the lunch company. Kenzie also did really well and even ate most of her lunch.

After lunch we decided to head to Steven (and Mike's) old neighborhood. Steven wanted to see the house he grew up in and how it has changed since being sold. I wanted to take Kenzie and Will to play at the playground that they all played at when they were little. The playground has been entirely redone, but it was the idea that counted. Kenzie loved getting a chance to play and Will (who was still awake at this point) enjoyed playing too.

We went to Rosie's after the playground for Italian ice. Rosie's is by far, the best Italian ice I have ever had. It is a mom and pop place and so... very... good. Kenzie and I (and Will had a bite or two) shared vanilla chip while Steven had lemon.

Will finally fell asleep on the way back from Rosie's but he only slept for maybe 20-30 minutes. Kenzie is still running on no nap today. We packed up some things, played with the kids, and then Steven and Mike ran to pick up LaSpada's. I have never had this South Florida staple before but it was soooo good! I can see why everyone is obsessed.

We are now relaxing and preparing to leave tomorrow morning for the Keys. We will head out in the morning, grab some breakfast on the way and then head towards Islamorada first. We are staying in Marathon for two nights before coming back to Fort Lauderdale for a couple of nights. I am so excited to go to Bahia Honda tomorrow afternoon/everning! It is by far one of my favorite beaches ever. We haven't been since before the kids were born and I am excited to take them tomorrow. We think that we should have Internet access tomorrow and the next day, but we will see when we get to the hotel.

Until tomorrow!

Ushering in Five-and-a-half

No. Nope. Not happening. Not even close.... but it is. As of tomorrow, Will is officially five-and-a-half. Halfway to six. SIX. What on earth? Both of our kids need to slow their roll and take it down a notch. It's so crazy to think that Will is going to be six in just six short months. He will start Kindergarten soon. He is already registered and ready to go. He is growing up so fast right before our eyes and it is a happy and sad time for me as Mama, for sure. So, a short update on Will at 5-and-a-half... - Will is growing like a weed. It is not uncommon right now for people to ask me if he has grown inches upon inches overnight. We are noticing that he is catching up to Kenzie fairly quickly and some of his friends that he used to be very similar in height to, he has gotten slightly taller than them. It's just his growth spurt time, apparently.  He remains remarkably skinny. So skinny that his clothes tend to fall of of him if we don't have adjustable waists. T...

Preschool Done.... One Step Closer to MIT

So, here it is. The end of "preschool." Note: "Preschool" and "VPK" are not used interchangeably for the purpose of our discussion. In the sense of the word, Kenzie is done with "preschool" and next year will be in "VPK". Eek! That's not allowed. Kenzie's first official year in school is now done. She is one year older, one year wiser, one year more stubborn. It's crazy for us to think back that just a few short months ago we were going to her Meet the Teacher day and we were both having some major anxiety about our baby going to school. I remember the first day of school plain as day. I thought she might have some apprehension. Nope. None. I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Kenzie went in like she owned the place. There was a day that her teacher mentioned that Kenzie was one of the quiet ones in the class and rarely spoke. I'm still not sure that she was thinking of my Kenzie. Maybe I had been dropping of...

Eight is Great!

Today Kenzie is EIGHT! It's so crazy. We have an 8 year old. Only two years away from double digits. A third grader. A girl that is quickly becoming a preteen. There is only a year left (technically) until that is officially the stage we are in. Though I have to say... she acts more and more like an actual preteen every day of her life. She's too much. We often joke that she is 8 going on 28, but in all honesty, she is an old soul and often acts much older than her years. At 8-years-old, Kenzie... - Is still the friendliest kid I know. She loves with her whole heart. She hates to hurt anyone's feelings. The downside is that her feelings get hit hard when someone isn't nice to her. We have had to deal with that on occasion, especially in the last year when we had a run in with a girl that Kenzie thought was her friend but she ended up being not really nice to Kenzie in the long run. We learned as parents that the "mean girl" stage starts early. Kenzie...
