Week 4 is here!! After this week we are around 1/3 of the way through the training plan and less than 10 weeks out from race day. I'm getting more and more excited and yet more and more nervous all at the same time. I know I can finish 13.1 miles. I'm just worried about doing it in the time allotted. I should be fine though. I could mostly walk and run a couple minutes each mile while staying under the time allotted. But... on to week 4. Here we go!
Monday
Plan: Cross Train, Actual: Life
Does that count? To just say that I did life that day? Probably not but I'm busy all the time so I'm counting it. Again, another day of 10,000 steps without training. And that even included not doing a ton during baseball practice AND going to worship rehearsal where I pretty much stood in one spot for more than an hour. Honestly, other than those two things and making sure Will stayed out of trouble, I can't even remember what I did that day.
Tuesday
Plan: 3.5 Miles, Actual: 3.5 Miles
Another day, another 3.5 miles. This one wasn't too bad. I felt pretty good about it. These shorter runs are definitely getting easier. I also realized that I need to start writing these posts on the day I actually run because my memory for the runs themselves stinks. I know I felt okay and got it done... but I don't remember much more than that.
Wednesday
Plan: Rest, Actual: Rest
This was another one of those days that I didn't have to do anything extra other than live my life and got my 10,000 steps. I also realized that unlike when I first started three runs a week just a few weeks ago, I don't have any soreness at all the day after shorter runs. Previously I would have some minor aches and pains but those are all gone. My taping for my achilles is great too and I don't have that pain any longer. While I think I could probably stop taping on shorter runs, I'm afraid not to at this point. Usually my rule is that if I know I plan to run more than walk, I tape.
Thursday
Plan: 3.5 Miles, Actual: 3.5 Miles
This short run felt really good. While my splits climbed just slightly each miles, they stayed relatively "low" (for me) through the entire run. I started at 13:00 which isn't bad considering that I do 1:1 splits still. Then did mile 2 at 3:21 and mile 3 at 13:18. I'm usually pretty happy when my splits stay fairly consistent or are negative. The ones that go up significantly are the ones that make me sad. One thing I wish at this point... that fall would make the decision to show up and stay. These 75 degree runs with 90% humidity even at 5:30 in the morning are the worst. It shouldn't be that warm and humid before the sun even comes up.
Friday
Plan: Rest, Actual: Rest
Well, it finally happened. Since the start of half training, I have only had one day that I didn't hit 10,000 steps until this day. It was the second day of training and the only reason was that I didn't push it because I was still having some back pain. This day was another one of those days though that I didn't hit. However, it was mainly because I was at our church's women's retreat in Daytona Beach. I did get almost 8,000 steps but by the time I realized I was that close and could probably get the final mile, it was 11pm and we were being kicked out of the fire pit area because it was closing. It was too dark to walk on the beach and my roommate and I were ready to turn in. Granted, we MIGHT have spent the next two hours chatting in our room... but that was so much more fun than pacing a mile around hallways at the hotel. The fellowship and friendship was more important to me that night.
Saturday
Plan: 5 Miles, Actual: 5 Miles
This one was tough. I was so tired from only having about 4 hours of sleep the night before and then driving back from Daytona Beach. I was also experiencing my typical anxiety related to not getting all the things done, namely this run, as soon as possible. I considered getting up early Sunday to run but would have needed to get up around 4:30 am because I had to be at church early for worship rehearsal since I was singing with the team that Sunday so I nixed that. I should have waited until the sun went down to go out and run... but I didn't. I was too amped up about missing it and decided to cut my losses and go while it was still hot. Too hot for that matter. I left the house about 4:30 and trudged through 5 miles. I walked. A lot. Let's just say my pace was 14:18. I did learn one thing though... if I can make it through 5 miles at that pace in those conditions, I can totally make it 13.1 in better conditions at less than 15 minutes per mile paces. That is the max pace allowed for the half. I mean, I walked the majority of this run including almost entirely walking mile 5 and even that was only a pace of 15:43 (my overall was under 15 though because of my other paces bringing it down some. My weather on my Garmin says I started that run at 90 degrees. That doesn't include the heat index. So... there's that. It wasn't smart but I got it done. Oh, and I also developed a blister on one toe. I was a hot mess. I could feel it starting about mile 3 and probably should have come home and put a bandaid on it... but I didn't. And I regretted it the next day, that's for sure. I think I will put a bandaid on when I run the next few weeks just to make sure it doesn't happen again. Not sure what was different about this run that caused it unless it just had something to do with my gait. I was definitely walking and running a bit differently because of the conditions.
Sunday
Plan: Rest, Actual: Rest
Church worship for two services and I left with almost 3,000 steps. Partly because of the amount of walking I do and partly because of the amount of clapping I do. Haha! I finished my day though with over 13,000 steps thanks to a very quick trip to Epcot so I know I got my 10,000 in honestly, as well. I did have that annoying blister though which popped on its own at some point so that was super fun. I had it covered with a bandaid though so I could wear closed toed shoes to church and then tennis shoes to Disney so it wasn't too bad since nothing was rubbing on it.
Total Weekly Miles: 12
Total Training Miles: 40.85 (Last week I messed up and included Tuesday's run this week in my total mileage because I wrote the blog post late and forgot to remove the miles from the current week.)
